What Are Macronutrients?

Macronutrients — often shortened to "macros" — are the three main categories of nutrients your body needs in relatively large amounts to function: carbohydrates, protein, and fat. Unlike vitamins and minerals (which are needed in smaller quantities), macronutrients serve as your primary sources of energy and the raw materials for nearly every biological process. Carbohydrates: Your Body's Preferred Fuel

Protein: Builder, Repairer, Regulator

Protein is made up of building blocks called amino acids. Your body uses amino acids to build and repair muscle tissue, produce enzymes and hormones, support immune function, and transport molecules through the bloodstream. Of the 20 amino acids involved in human metabolism, nine are considered essential — meaning your body cannot produce them and must obtain them from food.

Animal-based proteins (meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy) generally contain all nine essential amino acids in sufficient quantities and are referred to as complete proteins. Many plant-based proteins — such as beans, lentils, and grains — are incomplete individually but can complement each other across the day to meet amino acid needs. Fat: Essential, Not the Enemy

Dietary fat has a complicated reputation, but it performs functions no other macronutrient can replicate. Not all fats behave identically in the body:
